IDENTITY CRISIS - The ups and downs of living, working and dating in a foreign language.
Summary: Learning a new language can provide you with new work opportunities and romantic prospects, but sometimes, no matter how fluent you are, you still tend to stick out like a sore thumb. In this talk, polyglot YouTuber Lindie Botes discusses how language learning helps one ease into a new culture and bridge the gap between local and foreigner. A Third Culture Kid at heart, Lindie has lived in Islamabad, Paris, Dubai, Johannesburg and Tokyo, and and currently works as a designer in Singapore. With plenty of embarrassing, insightful and funny stories from her international working and dating experience, you'll learn how learning a new language is much more than just grammar and vocabulary - it's a culture and new way of seeing the world. Lindie also gives tips on how to ease into an environment that isn't predominantly in your native language, whether it be for friendship, travel or work. You can expect to be entertained and walk away with a mind more open to experiencing the world in a different language.
---
I'll also be available to answer any language-learning or cultural questions you may have since it's a live talk and you're welcome to participate! Some of you have asked me how I got a job in Singapore and what the move and cultural adjustments were like, so this is a good opportunity for us to chat, too.
